So you have just joined Instagram. Now what? You are eager and ready to show the Instagram world your photo skills only to notice that you are getting very little activity on your totally awesome photos…
Why? Well it must be your lucky day as I have some tips that are very easy to implement to get your page instafamed today!
#1: Have a public profile
It is imperative that your profile is public if you want to maximize the amount of likes you get when you post a photo on Instagram. This is because when you are public, your hashtags are also public to anyone searching them. Also when someone likes or comments on your photo it will show up in their followers feed only if you are public. This increases likes since most Instagram users are following friends, family, and people who they usually trust.
#2: Use interesting hashtags
Instead of using overused hashtags like #smile #cat #fitness that Instagram is already penetrated with, use or create your own unique hashtags that fit the particular theme of your account. For example if you are a Fitness trainer instead of using the hashtag #fit, you can find use specialized hashtags like #fitfam #girlswholift or use your own name to create one.
In order for your hashtags to be seen; especially if they are generic ones like #fit #instagood #potd #tbt #wcw you have to hashtag your photos right away. I recommend not hashtagging in your original post but hashtagging in a future comment. This way you can use 30 hashtags on Instagram without looking too “spammy”.
#4: Stick to a schedule
I would recommend sticking to schedule that you feel comfortable posting on Instagram. This could be anything from daily to weekly but whatever you choose keep it consistent.
I know this is easier said than done as life gets in the way. You could schedule posts thru Latergram.me if you are having a crazy week or are on vacation.
#5: Ask a question with your caption?
Did you know that captions are one of the most important elements of your Instagram feed? This is because they “paint a picture” and give your followers a insight as what you were currently feeling when you posted that photo (aka mood). By asking a question on Instagram you are connecting with each follower personally since they each have different ways of answering the same question. This makes your followers feel like their thoughts and opinions matter to you- and at the end of the day that’s all we can ask for is recognition. Nike recently asked: Why walk on water when you can fly? #askwhatif
#6: Engage with followers
People connect with people. Simple as that. Your followers want to know that there is a REAL person behind that amazing feed of photos. There is no better way to show them appreciation by reaching out and engaging. Respond back to their comments individually makes each follower feel unique and special and shows them that you appreciate their comments and their likes.
Most active Instagram followers will continue to be active followers unless you did something to tick them off. You will notice that they will become like your own “Instagram army” liking and commenting on all of your pictures in your feed. I’ve even seen these active followers standing up for you when a negative comment is posted.

#7: Be YOU. Be REAL!
There are millions of accounts on Instagram. The only way you are going to stand out amongst the crowd is to give your own authetic spin on things. This could mean by coming up with funny or captivating questions or captions that keeps your Instagram followers guessing: “what’s next?”
I’m sure you can already tell which types of photos do well on your feed just by comparing likes. But giving your followers what they want doesn’t have to mean posting the same type of photo over and over again- this will easily get boring to your followers as i’m yawning just thinking about it.
I like to post a mixed mode of photos that keep myself as well and my followers engaged. If I take a look at my own feed and get bored this is a major sign I need to switch things up. These changes could be anything from subtile angle switches, to using that selfie stick or changing your scenery but remember to always stay true to yourself and your personal brand on Instagram.
#8: Create your own hashtags
Custom hashtags are becoming the major thing for not only people but brands on Instagram. Instagram influencers and brands encourage their community to tag their own photos using their hashtag. You can create some serious loyalty for you or your brand by creating your own branded hashtag on Instagram.
This is how it works: You or your brand will benefit by increasing your exposure to new customers that are not yet following you, and your customers will benefit from whatever you are offering them could be a shoutout, etc. This is a great way to create user generated content thru your Instagram community.
For example check out Anastasia Beverly Hills, millions of user generated posts under their hashtags #anastasiabeverlyhills #anastasiabrows
#9: Liking photos
This is easy and it works. For this to be effective you have to like lots and lots of photos often! I would suggest going thru certain hashtags that are related to you or your industry.
Instagram users are reciprocateto giving back a like if not multiple likes to the user that initiates this (YOU). What this means for you is it may not work every time, but when it does work it works really well! It is time consuming but think of it as an investment for you or your brand that could potentially help you build up loyal community of engaged like minded Instagram users.
